Six Feet Down / Rebirth
The element of ‘temporality’ in these unique screenprints played an important role in my representation of the human body. Unique prints, like the body, adhere to a life cycle and will eventually decay. There is a fundamental connection between my method of working and the representation of the human body. The work was a hybrid of controlled incidents in which works, to a large degree, made themselves. I describe them as ‘organic’, not only because of the form but also due to the method of working. The images were made by painting on screens used in silkscreen technique and pouring solvents while printing. It was printing approached in a wider sense which allowed keeping the trace of the direct effect of chemicals. Such a method of printing is a creative process itself. The results are abstracted forms communicating by means of allusions, just on the border between suggestion and association. The prints also become a form of memory revealing part of the process of the labour of their making. The question of what properly constitutes printmaking, of printmaking techniques, is bypassed by the condition of its actuality.
