Ephemeral and Entropic Properties of Ice as an Image-making Methodology
Conference – academic paper, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, September 11 – 12, 2025
Iwona Abrams presented an academic paper Ephemeral and Entropic Properties of Ice as an Image-making Methodology at Sixteenth International Conference on The Image. The paper explored the ephemeral and entropic properties of melting ice as a means of experimental image production and the impact of ambient data on image making processes. With reference to research and examples of a fieldwork the paper discussed first: How the transient and contingent qualities of ice can be employed in the process of making images on paper? Secondly: What if environmental and ambient data could be a part of the actual image production? It also sought to advance existing approaches within image media through the development of methodological, conceptual and aesthetic contributions to the environmental concerns of contemporary image making production.
The conference hosted by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and organised by The Image Research Network was brought together around a shared interest in the nature and function of image-making and images. The conference’s Special Focus—From Democratic Aesthetics to Digital Culture featured presentations by a range of speakers and provided an international perspective on: The Form of the Image, Image Work, The Image in Society and Creative and Cultural Technologies, amongst others.
