vak / hole in ice

*Vak: Swedish, an ice crack you fall into

Vak / Hole in Ice, exhibited as part of Hyphen – An Exposition Between Art and Research, silkscreen prints, ice projection and unique ice prints installation, Ambika P3 Gallery, University of Westminster, London. The exhibition brought together PhD students and research staff from the University of Westminster.

With reference to research, practical tests and examples of site-specific work created in Sweden, presented works explored a fine line between research and artwork through idiosyncratic methods of documentation and recording. Vak employed the ephemeral and entropic properties of melting ice as a means of production of unique and variable print outcomes. The works demonstrated how natural phenomena can be apprehended and represented through the means of artistic production and how these can be translated into aesthetic experience. The documentation and production methods investigated how the transient and contingent qualities of ice can be employed in the process of printing and also serve as an alternative method for bringing the remote locations of the frozen Swedish lakes to viewers. The process involved: collecting and documenting ice on locations, ice printing on paper and recordings of ice melting projections.
