Redshift
Multiple Matters – Grafische Koncepte (Graphic Concepts), International Print Network, exhibited at Künstlerhaus, Karlsplatz 5, Vienna, Austria
Redshift, a series of unique prints, is a physical manifestation of research into the ephemeral qualities of ice and the development of a unique printing method employing ice and pigments. Large-scale prints were produced over a 12 month period of studio based experiments in conjunction with exposure to the knowledge, history and tools used in Astronomy/Physical sciences. The main set of works consists of three prints on paper, each 183x237cm. The prints were originated from printing with ice blocks ranging in size from 3 cubic cm (ice cubes) to 114 cm diameter circular slabs of ice. Each print has been constructed from multiple layers incorporating drawings mapping the changes of the melting ice and red pigments. In the use of colour, the intention was to create a form of cosmic panoramic landscape provoking fundamental emotions, comparable to the feelings of pleasure experienced when watching the sunset.
The idea is focused on the fact that stars’ only visible characteristic feature is the colour of their light. Most of the galaxies appear redshifted. It means that nearly all are moving away from us…
